  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter

Instructions

  1. In a large pot over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the sliced onions and cook slowly for about 30 minutes until golden brown.
  2. Pour in the white wine and scrape any browned bits from the bottom of the pot. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  3. Add beef broth and bring to a gentle boil. Reduce heat and simmer for another 20 minutes.
  4. Toast baguette slices until golden brown. Ladle soup into oven-safe bowls, top with toasted bread, and sprinkle generously with Gruyère.
  5. Broil until cheese is bubbly and golden (about 5 minutes). Serve hot.
